To stop global warming the #green house effect must be curbed. Since the green house effect is caused by green gases, then the activities that bring about the introduction of these harmful substances into the atmosphere should be completely eradicated. First of all #air pollution which is a major problem in the world today can be reduced drastically if adequate measures are taken to this effect.
In most urban cities, especially in Nigeria, the air is gradually becoming unbreathable largely because of lead fumes being expelled from old and rusty exhaust pipes of cars, lorries and trailers. Thus, putting the public health of individuals at risk. One way to stop this incessant #pollution from these vehicles is by enforcing the laws that govern vehicle registration and maintenance, and if possible sanction these vehicles from further pollution of the environment.
Secondly, the #energy and electricity can be evenly distributed across the country in such a way that the use of
generating plants both small and large can be drastically reduced to the barest minimum. When businesses, offices and residential houses have adequate power supply, the use of generators will be far fetched. And this in turn will reduce the rate of air pollution in the environment.
Industrial #air pollution is another major cause of #global warming. Gas flaring activities in the Niger Delta regions of Nigeria and elsewhere around the world have contributed largely to the introduction of green house gases which trap radiant energy which in turn leads to increase in the earth’s surface temperatures giving way to global warming.
One way to stop this gas flaring is to channel this natural gas
and use it naturally. The fact that natural gas is frequently found with crude oil has contributed to the growth of the natural gas industry. But to get rid of this gas. It has to be flared, that is ignited at the well head and left to burn as in the case of the Niger Delta regions of Nigeria mentioned earlier.
Countries like the United States discovered the use of natural gas as far back as the 1820’s with first natural gas well drilled in the country which was opened up at Fredonia, New York in 1821. Before then manufactured #gas from oil was the main stream throughout the 19th century, and it’s still in use in various communities today. The Chinese however made use of this commodity as early as 140 BC! They piped the gas
through hollow bamboo rods from the sites where it was channeled to the sea shore, and there burned it to evaporate the brine to produce salt. Such commercial use of natural gas wasn’t common, and for thousands of years the ancients knew of the existence of this gas but looked on it as a natural marvel rather than as a marketable commodity.
George Washington commented wonderingly in 1775, on a “burning spring”, on the banks of the Kanawha River near Charleston, West Virginia. Gas seeping from the ground in this area had been ignited and provided a natural torch.
In Nigeria and subsequently African nations where gas
flaring is still very much carried out, can take a cue from the examples mentioned above by putting to good and adequate use the millions of cubic meters of gas still wasted through flaring today. This will in turn stop the green house effect and global warming ultimately in the long run.
Another solution to this seemingly growing problem is to stop deforestation altogether. The incessant felling of trees like timber in Nigeria and other African nations, and in other parts of the world should be stopped and eradicated. When #vegetation cover is removed, the heat in that area or region increases rapidly. Places where plants and trees thrive are cooler and the process of #photosynthesis in plants makes the
atmosphere and area more healthy to live in. When you live amongst trees and plants, carbon emissions are drastically reduced and minimized. Also, spreading the knowledge about conservation and working together with others towards creating a cleaner earth and adopting safer practices which aren’t harmful to the environment such as recycling while employing the use of technology such as geo- engineering.
Finally, wildlife species are gradually becoming extinct. Human respiratory diseases are on the increase. Deaths from natural disasters such as flooding, landslides and drought is also on the increase. Snow cover and ice sheets are declining or melting due to increase of the earth’s surface temperatures. We all as inhabitants of the earth must ensure that we adopt these practices to prevent our environment from further pollution and damage.
